The most commonly used raw material for these perfumes is chalcone, a synthetic substance discovered in 1951 by Pfizer scientists. Initially researched for its potential as a food additive to mimic the flavor of watermelon, chalcone was found to be similar to sea spray due to its structure resembling the pheromones of certain algae. In crystal form, chalcone has a strong odor, but when diluted, it releases a distinctive iodine-like scent.
Over time, other synthetic materials such as melanol and floralozone, as well as natural ingredients such as lotus flowers, blue cypress, and algae, have been used to create these marine aromas. Natural materials tend to tone down the pure marine scent with floral or green notes.
