The origins of white musk date back to the transition from natural to synthetic materials in perfumery. Traditionally, musk was extracted from the glandular secretions of musk deer, a costly process that was harmful to the animal population. Due to ethical and sustainability concerns, the late 19th century saw the advent of synthetic musk compounds.

The term "white musk" was coined during this period to differentiate these synthetic molecules from their natural counterparts. Chemists developed these synthetic musks in the laboratory, aiming to replicate the desirable characteristics of natural musk while eliminating the harsher, more animalistic odors.
